My friend and I stayed at the Amadeus for three days in October. It was not at all fancy, but clean and comfortable. The location is outstanding!!!! The breakfast room is cheerful and overlooks the square. I do recommend getting a room in the back as the noise from the square can be a bother. We had a wonderful visit.

“Amadeus Hotel in Haarlem -- Great value for the money.”
My wife and I spent five nights at the Amadeus Hotel in Haarlem, the Netherlands. We based our choice on price, and on the write ups for it in various guide books and websites. These sources said the Amadeus provided good basic accommodations in a charming location -- on the Grote Markt square in the heart of old Haarlem. We had an excellent, comfortable stay there, and unreservedly recommend it to others looking for clean, comfortable, affordable rooms in an excellent location.
The rooms were relatively basic, as the reviews we read had accurately reported. But the beds were comfortable, the in-rooom bathroom and shower perfectly adequate, and the premises clean and tidy. And very quiet (our room was on the top floor, at the back.) The building is quite an old one, with steep winding stairs, and a very small noisy elevator which starts on the first floor, not the ground floor. Those with mobility problems would not find it a good choice.
The continental breakfast -- included in the price of our room -- was not fancy, but certainly more than met our needs. Breakfast was the only meal available in the dining room; the rest of the business day, it operates as an internet cafe, with reasonable rates. Wifi was available for a daily fee.
The hotel's location -- between the old town hall and St. Bavo's church -- was enchanting. It is about a 15min walk from the central train and bus station. If you have rolling bags or light luggage, it is a practical walk. We did take a taxi from the hotel to the bus station when we left, since it was 5am, and snowing. The ride was less than 8 euros.
The hotel concierges were pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful.
I will add that Haarlem proved to be an idea headquarters for exploring. It is a short, fast commute into and out from Amersterdam, and as a rail hub, gives excellent access to many other towns and villages. It is also a convenient 38 minute bus ride from the airport.

“Cheapish and cheerfulish”
Haarlem is a beautiful small city close to Amsterdam. The compact city centre is best explored on foot, and it's also a great base from which to explore other parts of Noord-Holland. The NS railway station is a 10 minute walk to the north, and the location is unparalleled: right on the south side of Grote Markt, with a great view onto the busy city square from either the front bedrooms or the high ceilinged breakfast room / lobby on the first floor.
Haarlem has a dearth of cheap city centre accommodation. Any Haarlemers with a big city centre townhouse should seriously consider a budget hostel to rival the town's only really cheap option - the StayOkay which is some distance away in the northern suburbs. I'd read cautious reviews of that option, and chosen to pay a bit more (€130 / 2 nights, high season weekend) to be in the city centre.
The hotel is above a café - although there's a lift between the first, second and third floors, it would appear you have to climb at least one set of stairs to enter. Check in was easy and I purchased wireless internet for €5/24hours, although this is still working well into my second day. The entire hotel was Haarlem's first non-smoking one, although by the time you probably read this (after 1 July 2008) a national smoking ban will be in effect.
My room (34) is a single on the top floor (and has already been photographed by another reviewer here). While I appreciate that few hotel rooms have windows on two sides of the building for cross ventilation, being a narrower room on the west side of the top floor, the large window turned the room into an oven during the second half of the summer days. An oscillating fan purloined from an alcove down the corridor helped. The single bed was ok, but an annoying shelf above the bed meant one couldn't lean against the wall to watch the small TV (with Dutch, German and a couple of British channels). There's also a phone and an in-room combination safe, which will look after all but the biggest laptops.
There is no night staff in the building; access is with a key card and there's an emergency phone contact if there are problems. Late arrivals can arrange (with prior warning) to collect their key card from a combination lock box. Breakfast is included and is expansive with cereals, yoghurt, breads, meat, cheese etc.
So, overall, ok, but verging on being too expensive, mainly due to Haarlem's lack of budget accommodation. Those with limited mobility would probably find the stairs a problem.

Lorna who works at Hotel Amadeus was very gracious in helping us on our recent trip to Haarlem. While we didn't stay here, we did need a place to leave our luggage, as we had just arrived in Holland and wanted to stop in Haarlem on the way to Delft, in order to see the flower floats from the parade on April 21. The lockers at the train station don't take money, only credit cards with a chip, so we couldn't leave our luggage there. The Tulip Inn close to the train station refused to hold our luggage. We stopped at Hotel Amadeus, in the market square and asked Lorna if she could help us. She was so gracious and kind and gladly helped us out. With the wonderful kindness we received from this hotel, I would highly recommend a stay here. The people make the difference. They also have a computer in the breakfast room so you can keep in touch with home.
Thank you Lorna.

On behalf of all the group from Ward Station Seniors I would like to thank you both on our stay last weekend, another excellent stay in the Amadeus in Haarlem. Even with the weather being poor some of the time everybody really enjoyed their stay. We stayed at the Amadeus Hotel for 4 nights and had a great stay. Haarlem is only 20 min. away from Amsterdam by train, and we enjoyed the easy access to Amsterdam, but the small-town feel of Haarlem. The hotel rooms are very simple with a non-decorating approach to decorating, but they were clean and the room we had was spacious. The breakfast was the highlight of our day, with bread, meat, cheese, cereal, youghart, juice and coffee. The hotel also operates a small internet cafe, and it was great to have such convenient access to the web. The owners are very nice and helpful, and the hotel location (right on the main square) was fun since we felt we were right in the thick of things. We are booked to stay there again this summer, and are looking forward to another visit.

My father, Karl Munniks, just told me about your fine website. I am enjoying looking at it and will enjoying showing my husband and 5 children. We live in Tallahassee, Florida, but have a special interest in the Amadeum Hotel. Why? My father is the son of Gerrit Munniks, who used to own the Munniks Restaurant. You know some of the history of your building, I am sure! My father grew up there, and lived there for a few months after my parents were married in 1955, before they immigrated to the United States. My grandparents sold the restaurant in 1958. Have a great week! And thanks again for such a beautiful website! I love to teach my children about their Dutch heritage!

Good eating - cheap - in Haarlem and Amsterdam
My wife and I stayed in Haarlem, as recommended by Rick, during a recent trip to the Netherlands. Furthermore, we stayed at the B&B next door to the Amadeus Hotel, which is also run by Amadeus, and it was as nice as Rick says. No regrets there! Loved Haarlem, which is a lively and beautiful city. For good eating in Haarlem, check out Altro Mondo Trattoria, on Spaarne. Wonderful food, with most entrees costing 10 Euros or less. And in Amsterdam, go to Arnots, a sandwich place on Singel. Great bread, fresh ingredients, good prices. Happy travels!

We stayed @ your hotel in April '02, and I just went back to check your website. It is terrific!! I like the Grote Markt webcom which brings back wonderful memories. The Market Square seems to have a life and rhythm all its own. I have run thru most of the slides, and recognized most of the views from our time in Haarlem & the Netherlands.
Also the cybercafe site would be very easy to use! We especially liked your having a cybercafe in the hotel, as we kept in touch with our family in the U.S. We were able to travel as far north as Leeuwarden, down to Middelburg, and many places, museums, monuments, etc. in between. With the exception of Paris, the Netherlands is our favorite place to stay in Europe. We are looking forward to returning, so we can get to the Texel Islands, and down to Maastricht.

We were in Haarlem during some rather warm days and our room (#27) was a small oven. The sun baked in during the day and only a small part of the window could be opened. Lacking cross ventilation, sleeping at night was very difficult. Mike did get us a fan, but served only to circulate the stale, warm air.
The great location and availability of Internet access, could not overcome the begrudging service. Mike was at his most attentive when timing our Internet use. We did not feel welcome here and would not stay here again or recommend it.

Hello Mike and Dave, Thanks for the great stay at the Hotel Amadeus. I had
some bad luck with the key card during my stay. First evening the inner hotel door
wouldn't open, and second evening I lost the key card. First time the guy from Brasserie
L'Anders helped open the door, second time Dave came and made a new key for me, with
cheerfulness and without any charge. Due to this kind of great service, you helped to make
my first experience in the Netherlands a truly pleasant memory. Haarlem is a really
charming little town, and yet so close to Amsterdam.

Your reply to me regarding the following is limited to "Dear," and no
other text. Can you please try again to respond to the following, thank you: I read about
your Hotel Amadeus on the Rick Steves web site and am interested in making a reservation
for two nights for my wife and I (double) for the nights of July 30 and 31. I am in the
process of spending a few weeks vacation in Europe and on my way to Ritterhude (near
Bremen) to visit my three cousins who live there. Would appreciate a reply. In the event
you have no room, perhaps you could make a recommendation. Viellen dank, Henry und

Dear Mike, I just wanted to write and thank you for being an excellent host during
my recent visit to Haarlem. Having a pleasant and friendly place to stay
really made the trip enjoyable. Your brother Dave, Inez, your parents and yourself
do a wonderful job. Gayle and Joan also had a great time and enjoyed their stay with
you. I accomplished all the things that I had planned on doing and saw all the old
friends from years ago. So although I've been able to get reaquinted with my old
friends and probably have a place to stay when visiting in the future I'll be sure to stop
and see all of you again if I make it back. Thanks again, Jon Wright

Greetings once again!!!! I just wanted to thank you for all the information you sent
me! How very, very kind it was! From your list and much searching, I finally
found a room! Not just what I really wanted ( a small sort of hotel or zimmer) but a room
nontheless. At The Harlem Zuid - a very large hotel - located I am not sure
just where! ( but at least in Haarlem) However, I thought you were especially
helpful, and wanted you to know I appreciated it very much. Your guests must be very
lucky to have as their host one who is so helpful! Best regards, and have a great day!!!

Dag allemaal!

the European Tour button. Our page should be all finished and completed updated by next

I just want every one considering this hotel to know that it is good. This is now
the end of july and i still remember the feeling of the bed on my first day, way back in
march. this are the best beds i have been in many in many nites at many hotels. the people
that run hotel are the best and it is so nice to have breakfast while over looking the
activites market (saturday is nice because it is sort of farmers market in the square
below the breakfast area).haarlem is much nicer than amsterdam which is only 15 min away
by train. it is also the same distance from the airport. our choosing this hotel for our
first two nites was our best idea and a great start to our trip.

Please let me know what the cost would be. Maybe some Wine & Cheese. Thank You So

I`m really interested to know, that have you vacant rooms in August 1999? I`d like
to know how much it would cost if I and my friend like to stay at your hotel about a week?
We are students (age 17 and19),so I presume that it will be a little bit cheaper. Am I
right? Like I told we suppose to be there in August, between days from fourth or fifth to
twelth. I look forward to your response. Miia Ryyppö

We miss the Amadeus experience. Our first trip to Europe was much more than we
anticipated because we chose the Netherlands, and were fortunate enough to select Amadeus
for our "home base." Two females traveling alone, yet we always felt safe and
"at home." We can't wait to return to our "second home." You will find
Amadeus, Mike, and Inez to be the best part of your trip. Enjoy. Bobbie

I very much enjoyed your webpage, it warms my heart to be able to feel close to
Haarlem again, all the while sitting at home in San Francisco. The pictures are
great! I do hope to come back some day, Haarlem was such a nice discovery as a
diversion from Amsterdam and her frantic pace. Coming from this crowded city, I found it a
nice retreat from the hectic pace of a bigger city. I'm considering coming back to
the area at the end of July 1998 for a week or two, will you have a room? Either by
myself, or if I'm lucky enough to find someone to travel with me... I did meet a
pilot on my trip home who lives in Amsterdam, but I haven't spoke to her for a
while, which would encourage a return visit to Holland. :) I'll be
recommending your lovely hotel to all my friends here in the States, also, I am from the
Seattle area where Rick Steves is from.

Dear people, Last week Thursday myself and some friends (a group of Americans)
stayed at your Hotel. This is just a quick note to say Thank You very much from
providing such a wonderful and affordable place to stay! We spent a good deal of
time in Amsterdam before we decided to go to Haarlem based on a video we watched by Rick
Steves. We only wished we would have went sooner. Your city is the most lovely
we have been to in all of Holland, and your hotel was first class. We liked it so
much in fact that we are going to look for vacation property somewhere near by so we can
visit more often. Now to just find out how hard it would be for Americans to buy property
in your country. Best of luck to all of you for the future and once again thank you. Tony

Stayed from May 1 to May 10, 1999. Felt as if this was a second home. The
"steep steps" seemed a challenge at the annex, but then they became a source of
laughter - - not to mention the muscles developed!. We fast became "family
members" of Mike and Inez and all the people in Haarlem. Our room was
"quaint", comfortable, and always clean. Without question I will return to
Haarlem and to Amadeus. It's a perfect place to base as "home" and to take trips
of one, two, or three days. I would stay longer if I could - - I look forward to my return
visit.
